The right-back left Inter Milan on the expiry of his contract earlier this summer and is now set to join their Serie A rivals.
He had spent six years with Inter, having initially joined on loan from Parma in 2020 after leaving United the year prior.
But after featuring in over 200 games for the Italian giants, the 36-year-old departed, leaving him searching for a new club.
Now, after three months unattached, it seems he has found one, with Bologna said to have offered him a one-year deal.

According to journalist Fabrizio Romano, a deal has been agreed for Darmian to join the Serie A side on a free transfer.
Bologna full-back Emil Holm suffered a hamstring injury whilst playing for Sweden in the Nations League last week.
He was substituted just after the hour mark in a clash against Romania, and it has since been revealed that he requires surgery and could now miss four months of action.
That has left the club looking for a replacement defender, with Darmian, who can play on the left or right, going on trial.
And it seems that he has impressed, leading to him being offered a contract to stay and feature in the side.
Darmian last played a game in May, starting for Inter against Verona before being substituted in the second half.

Darmian, who is now 36 years old, won three trophies as a Man United player between 2015 and 2019.
He was part of the teams that won the FA Cup, Carabao Cup and Europa League, lifting all three titles.
The signings of Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Diogo Dalot left him no choice but to leave Old Trafford seven years ago though, as he returned to his home country and joined Parma.
The full-back had come through AC Milan‘s academy and played for Palermo and Torino before heading to the Premier League.
A move to Inter then came in 2020 and he thrived at the San Siro, winning three Serie A titles and three Italian Cups, also reaching the Champions League final twice.
Darmian left the club in June at the end of his contract and released a statement thanking all involved for his time there.

He wrote on Instagram: “After six years lived to the fullest, finding the right words isn’t easy.
“Six years that flew by in an instant — because when you wear a jersey with your heart, time isn’t measured in seasons, but in emotions, sacrifices, victories, setbacks, and the people who become family and a part of who you are.
“With a heart full of pride and gratitude for these colours, I thank the club, the staff, my teammates, and everyone who stood by me on this extraordinary journey.
“My thanks also go to you, the fans, who always supported me and made me feel like one of your own. Your affection has been a privilege, and I will carry it with me always.

“Our paths are parting, but there are bonds that will never end—because there are teams that stop being just a jersey and become home.”
Darmian could now end up playing against Inter in one of his first games as a Bologna player, as the two teams meet on October 17.
