The Wales midfielder, 22, last month signed for Championship rivals Wolverhampton Wanderers on loan, with an option to buy, from French Ligue 1 side Rennes.
He turned down possible moves to the Premier League to sign for the Wolves, who were relegated from the top-flight last season.
James enjoyed a successful 2025-26 campaign on loan at Leicester City, when he was named the Championship Young Player of the Season, having been linked with Wrexham before signing for the Foxes.
When asked whether joining Phil Parkinson’s side was on the cards in the most recent transfer window, James told the BBC: “That ship sailed I think. It was on last year.
“I’m glad I went to Leicester, I had such a good season – I enjoyed it so much.”
