Aston Villa are set to be without several first-team players when they face Coventry City in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday night.
Unai Emery has lost both Ian Maatsen and Pau Torres following Saturday’s 2-1 Premier League defeat to Nottingham Forest.
Maatsen sustained an ankle injury late in the game and is expected to spend around six to eight weeks sidelined after scans revealed tendon damage.
Torres was withdrawn much earlier with a hamstring problem, with Emery indicating the defender could miss approximately two to four weeks.
Both are therefore expected to miss Wednesday’s trip to Coventry.
Matty Cash remains Aston Villa doubt
Cash’s availability is less certain.
The right-back missed both the Champions League victory over Club Brugge and Saturday’s Forest defeat because of muscular discomfort.
He consequently remains a doubt ahead of the cup tie, with Aaron Wan-Bissaka available to continue at right-back if required.
Current Coventry-Villa previews also list Leon Goretzka among Villa’s unavailable players, alongside longer-term absentees Amadou Onana and Brian Madjo.
There is better news in midfield.
João Gomes is available again after completing the three-match domestic suspension triggered by his opening-day red card.
Johan Manzambi also returned to Villa’s matchday squad against Forest, giving Emery another option as he considers rotation.
Taylor Harwood-Bellis, Matteo Ruggeri, Alejandro Garnacho and Ibrahim Mbaye could all benefit from the injury situation and Villa’s congested schedule.
