Inès Belloumou is quickly becoming one of the clearest examples of the identity Rita Guarino wants from West Ham United Women.
The 25-year-old started at left-back in Saturday’s 2-1 victory over London City Lionesses and produced a performance built on aggression, discipline and willingness to defend.
It was not flashy.
It was exactly what West Ham needed.
Belloumou’s defensive mentality fits Guarino perfectly
Belloumou has never hidden how much she enjoys the defensive side of the game.
Speaking to West Ham’s official website towards the end of last season, she said she had learned to enjoy staying compact and patient before admitting she was “coming back to my roots” defensively.
That mentality feels particularly important under Guarino.
After the London City victory, the West Ham head coach said she had seen the “spirit that I want to see every time” and described it as part of the team’s identity.
Belloumou looks tailor-made for that approach.

Belloumou arrived back at West Ham after an outstanding summer with Algeria.
West Ham confirmed she was named in the 2026 WAFCON Team of the Tournament after starting all six matches as Algeria reached the semi-finals.
She also scored the winning penalty in the third-place shootout against Morocco.
That tournament gave Belloumou repeated exposure to high-pressure knockout football and appears to have strengthened the defensive confidence she had already started showing towards the end of last season.
