Tottenham Hotspur beat Charlton 5-1 to reach the Carabao Cup third round on Wednesday evening and Roberto De Zerbi is about to address the media.
After a flying save from Antonin Kinsky to push away Greg Docherty’s shot from distance, Spurs grabbed control of the game at the other end in the 42nd minute.
Nineteen-year-old winger Mikey Moore showed De Zerbi what he can do when he cut inside and unleashed a powerful left-footed effort that was just too fast for Charlton goalkeeper Tiernan Brooks to react to.
Within three minutes, Dominic Solanke, in his first start of the season, swivelled and finished clinically from 12 yards out into the bottom left corner of the net.
The game was over as a contest in the 67th minute when Spurs substitute Kevin Danso’s first touch was a header past Brooks from Mateus Fernandes’ free-kick. The Austrian took a blow to the face in scoring his first goal for the north London club.
Savio entered the fray shortly after and it took the 22-year-old just over 10 minutes to score his first goal for the club, cutting inside and unleashing a low left-footed drive that flew into the bottom right corner of the net.
He thought he had doubled his tally with a shot that deflected in off Ben Davies, but it was the Welshman’s goal, before Charlton’s Lloyd Jones headed home a late consolation.

De Zerbi on SavioYes it is a perfect day for him. I think his biggest step and biggest improvement is to increase the number of goals because (with) his qualities he is one of the best wingers. But the best wingers score many goals. I spoke with him yesterday, two days ago. We put the goal on 10-12 goals because we need 10-12 goals from the wingers. Last season, I think we suffered too much. Also because the number of goals were not enough to compete for nothing more than that position.

If we want to win the competition we want to win the games and sometimes in this competition it can happen to play already in the beginning against the big, big teams. It’s a great challenge for the players, for me, for the club and we have to arrive in that game ready to play in our style and ready to play in our personality.

De Zerbi on Mateus FernandesMateus Fernandes is another talent, big talent. We are lucky because he can cover two positions on the pitch, as a pivot or a number 10. He brings quality, he’s dynamic and he fights on the pitch. Last season he was one of the best players in winning the ball. Today I think Rodrigo Bentancur played very well and he will be very important for us. He started the season later than the others but when he’s fit he’s a different player. His understanding is great.
