Domenico Tedesco addressed the media on Wednesday and prioritised Euro 2024 qualification and making Kevin De Bruyne smile.
On the day he was introduced as Belgium’s new head coach, the 37-year-old faced questions about his aging squad and the mindset of star midfielder De Bruyne, who often cut a forlorn figure at the Qatar 2024 World Cup.
Tedesco stated it was his responsibility to “understand how we can make players not just smiling but motivated.”
The former RB Leipzig manager succeeds Roberto Martinez who stepped down in December after the team’s shock group-stage exit in Qatar.
His assistant, Thierry Henry, will not be a part of Tedesco’s coaching staff, with the Belgium Federation opting to go in a different direction post World Cup.
Tedesco has little over a month to galvanise his squad before Belgium open their 2024 European Championship campaign with an away match against Sweden in Stockholm.
