Lennox Lewis was the last undisputed heavyweight champion in history, and it’s easy to see why. Lewis soundly defeated the best of his era, garnering an impressive resume to go along with his insane highlight reel. Lewis was a boxer puncher, who fought on the outside until he was ready to take his opponent out. And while Lewis possessed incredible finesse, using his lead hand with the skill of a fencer using his sword, he also always went for the finishing shot.

And Lewis set these shots up with one of the best jabs ever seen in the ring. Lewis’s jab was certainly powerful, but it’s true power lied in it’s insane versatility. Lewis had a jab for every occasion, and as such he was able to exploit the specific weaknesses in any opponent’s chosen system for defense.

Lewis’ rising jab came up from his hip like Ali’s. But unlike Alis whipping lead, Lewis’ version jab was stiff. This meant that Lewis could drive his jab through the crack in his opponent’s guard like an uppercut, but obviously with much greater range. As such, this jab was ideal for stopping fighters who liked to move in with low line head moving. They were essentially ducking directly into Lewi’s jab.

But this was just the tip of the iceberg.

  1. When I was younger I always thought Lewis was just a big brute style fighter without much skill but after studying his technique he really was a great fighter. Thanks for the breakdown.

  2. Although stopping Mike Tyson was no real feat for Lennox Lewis, due to Tyson's lack of desire at that point, Lennox Lewis does not get the respect he deserves. He took on and beat all comers!!! amazing fighter of his time!!!

  3. Mike Tyson destroyed Mike Tyson by the time he fought Lewis, it was not the overly telegraphed overhand that followed Lewis's unavoidable jab from an 84'' reach.
Lewis is probably one of the most physically gifted boxers there ever was with an ideal height and arm length and that quality won him many fights.

  4. Lennox was the last boxer I really paid any attention to,and frankly, when he stopped boxing, I stopped watching boxing. He was the “last great heavyweight” in my opinion.

  5. Lewis was insanely versatile one of those jabs was getting you no matter what and when it did that follow up was the end

  6. He could never hit Mike tyson with those jabs yeah they were good but nothing close to prime Mike's head movement and footwork yeah I'd o respect Lennox Lewis & Evander Holyfield but none of them would have a chance against prime Mike Oliver mcall had beaten the shit outta Lewis yet prime Mike had beaten the shit outta Oliver mcall and Evander fought tough guy aswell i forgot his name he fought him three time & lost two times yet pime Mike had beaten the shit outta him so what so you they could beat the legendary prime tyson? No never but of course that doesn't mean I hate them I l really like Evander's style and Lewis's jab aswell but it's no competition against prime tyson's peekaboo style

  7. Of course being so tall with such long arms makes the jabbing so much more effective… for a shorter guy might not produce such results….?
