Nottingham Forest have identified Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Lucas Bergvall as a potential replacement for Elliot Anderson, according to The Athletic.
Anderson could leave the City Ground this summer with Manchester City and Manchester United pursuing the England international.
With Anderson’s future uncertain, Forest have turned their attention to one of the Premier League’s brightest young prospects.
Bergvall is expected to leave Tottenham in search of regular first-team football after struggling for minutes under Roberto De Zerbi.
The club is also trying to add new midfielders this summer, and he has told the club he wants.
The 20-year-old has reportedly decided a fresh challenge would best serve his development, putting several clubs across England and Europe on alert.
Aston Villa remain long-term admirers despite not actively pursuing a midfield addition unless they first sanction departures. Chelsea also showed interest in January.
Bergvall, who is under contract with Spurs until 2031, is currently representing Sweden at the World Cup.
He has made a substitute appearance and registered an assist in the opening 5-1 victory over Tunisia, but looked poor against the Netherlands.
He enjoyed an outstanding debut campaign following his move from Djurgarden in 2024, winning the club’s Player of the Year award and helping Spurs lift the Europa League.
However, if Forest are genuinely preparing for life after Anderson, Bergvall is not the best like-for-like replacement.
The Swede remains one of Europe’s most exciting young midfielders, but Anderson has already developed into one of the Premier League’s most complete central midfielders.
His ball-carrying, defensive intensity, tactical intelligence and consistency have made him indispensable to Vitor Pereira’s side.
Bergvall undoubtedly possesses impressive technical ability and drive, but he is still refining his game and has yet to prove he can dominate matches week after week in England’s top flight.
His limited minutes last season underline that he remains a work in progress rather than a finished product.
Forest could eventually help Bergvall fulfil his enormous potential, but expecting him to replace Anderson’s influence immediately would be unrealistic.
If Anderson departs, Forest would lose an established Premier League star and should not replace him with a gifted prospect still searching for his breakthrough.
