Thousands of people gathered in a city park to take part in races to raise money for cancer.

Southampton Common turned pink as runners, walkers and supporters took part in this year’s Race for Life.

The annual event saw participants of all ages and backgrounds take part in the 3K, 5K, 10K and Pretty Muddy runs.

Cath Wiggum, running with her dogs Treacle and Bobby in the 10km run, said: “I run mostly for my husband.

“He had bladder cancer and had stoma surgery.

“After that, he actually had it worse and suffered from respiratory failure.

She added: “I also have lots of people, lots and lots of family and friends I’m running for.

“Some of them survived, some didn’t, some are still fighting.

“I’m running for all of them and everyone that loves them because it affects everyone.”

Anca Jurca lost her brother-in-law to cancer in April, she said: “I’ve always liked running, but then I found out about this years back. I work in the hospital in the theatres, and when you work in a theatre, you face all of this.

“This year in April, my brother-in-law was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, so now it’s really even more.

“At the moment it’s still raw and fresh, but it’s for him.”

Other runners donned special outfits for the event.

Aimee Jackson ran dressed as a dinosaur alongside her brother Matthew, who donned a shark outfit.

Aimee said: “We’re running for our Auntie Mary, she has dealt with cancer quite a lot in her lifetime.

“A lot of different cancers, and we just want to make sure she knows we’re there for her.”

Jake Haven and Lukasz Frack both work at Southampton Hospital in the theatre department said: “We’re here to represent our patients and their care and raise money for them.”

Lukasz added: “We run for our patients, but I also run for my dad, who is a survivor of a cancer and is still with us, and he’s doing well.”

A total of £137,454 was raised for charity as a result of the event.
