SEATTLE (June 19, 2026) – In a clash between the top two teams in Group D, the U.S. Men’s National Team reigned supreme, putting together a comprehensive 2-0 victory over Australia, making more U.S. soccer history in the process and sending a massive crowd of 66,925 into a patriotic frenzy.

With the win and three points, the USA – which now has the full six points from two matches – has qualified for the Round of 32 with one group stage match left to play. The USA could win the group today, pending the outcome of the Paraguay-Türkiye match later tonight, but today’s triumph marked the first time the USMNT has qualified for a knockout round at the World Cup in the modern era after just two group matches.

The six points also represent the most points for the USMNT in a group stage of any FIFA World Cup.

The U.S. goals came early and late in the first half. The first was courtesy of first game hero, forward Folarin Balogun, who forced an Australia own goal in the 11th minute, racing around the left side of the defense and rolling a cross into the middle of the box that was bundled in by Australia defender Cameron Burgess.

The second came in the 43rd off a set play after Ricardo Pepi did well to hold off a defender near the end line on the right and earn a free kick. Defender Alex Freeman then brought down the house with his close-range header off a deflected Sergino Dest shot that had gone straight up in the air and was falling inside the six-yard box. Australia goalkeeper Patrick Beach was out of position as he’d dove to his right on the Dest drive, and Freeman beat him to the ball to nod home for a vitally important second goal.

As it did against Paraguay in the first game, the Americans put together an almost perfect first half, dominating possession, shots and overall chances against a Socceroos side that was content to play a very compact low block.

The USA, however, found a way around and through the packed defense, and the early goal meant that the Aussies had to come out of their shell at some point. As frustration mounted for the Australians, the physicality increased, but the U.S. matched it and it was Australia which received two first half yellow cards and several more verbal warnings from the referee.

The massive and euphoric crowd in Seattle, which was bathed in red, white and blue, and drowned out a large contingent of Aussie fans over the entire match, represented yet another milestone event in U.S. Soccer history, one that will always be remembered in the lore of the USMNT.

If Türkiye were to lose or draw against Paraguay later today (9 p.m. PT in Santa Clara, Calif.) then the U.S. will finish first in Group D, which sets up a knockout stage matchup against the third-place team from either Group B, E, F, I or J at San Francisco Bay Area Stadium on July 1. The USA will not know its Round of 32 opponent until the end of the overall group play.

The U.S. concludes its Group D schedule back in Southern California against Türkiye on Thursday, June 25 at 7 p.m. PT/10 p.m. ET at Los Angeles Stadium. After that, it will be time to prepare for the Round 32, which runs June 28-July 3.

Goal Scoring Rundown:

USA –OWN GOAL (Cameron Burgess), 11th minute: Fullback Antonee Robinson played a long, low pass up the left flank to Folarin Balogun. The striker turned on the jets, racing past his defender toward goal with two hard dribbles. From just outside the six-yard box, Balogun fired a short cross into a dangerous area. Australia’s Cameron Burgess ran through the ball to knock it upward and into his own net from close range. USA 1, AUS 0

USA – ALEX FREEMAN, 43rd minute: Midfielder Malik Tillman earned the U.S. a free kick about30 yards from goal right near the right end line. Antonee Robinson took the kick, but instead of crossing into the middle, he played a pass to Sergiño Dest who was open inside the penalty circle. The wingback cracked a right-footed shot that caught a deflection and lofted high into the air. Freeman followed the ball and outjumped the ‘keeper to knock down a header from about three yards to double the lead. USA 2, AUS 0 FINAL
