Leeds United are claimed to be one of the Premier League clubs interested in signing Parma and Japan goalkeeper Zion Suzuki.

The Whites have multiple positions that we’ll want to strengthen over the summer months. One of those is potentially the goalkeeper slot, with Karl Darlow’s position uncertain.

Darlow, 35, is out of contract and yet to pen fresh terms at Elland Road – amidst interest from Old Trafford and Spurs. It therefore prompts the club to explore replacements.

Leeds United and Aston Villa interested in Parma, Japan goalkeeper Zion Suzuki

A report from Italian journalist Gianluigi Longari claims that United have set sights on a goalkeeper currently playing at the World Cup.

Japan’s Zion Suzuki, contracted to Serie A side Parma, has impressed for his nation as well as at club level over the past few years.

Now, it’s said that Leeds and Aston Villa are two Premier League clubs already compiling scouting reports on the 23-year-old.

Despite conceding twice against the Netherlands in Japan’s opening game, Suzuki put in a very respectable performance with four saves. Suzuki’s current contract runs until the summer of 2029, giving Parma plenty of time to mull over any looming offers.

Reports in Italy (via the Express and Star) claim that Parma are demanding between €25-30million (£21.7-26million) for Suzuki.

Leeds United could do a lot worse than Zion Suzuki to replace Karl Darlow

In the absence of any concrete updates on Darlow penning a new deal, it looks increasingly likely that we’ll have to look elsewhere.

It’s a shame because I’m sure I’m not alone in thinking I’d be happy with Darlow being tied down again. He’s more than proved his worth to the club in the Premier League.

That being said, if we are to lose Darlow, signing a long-term replacement with room to continue developing is vital. Suzuki at 23 looks the ideal profile that we should consider.

Of course, he won’t be the only ‘keeper that we’re looking at this summer. And, he’s probably not even the only one at the World Cup that we like the look of.

But, I certainly would be happy if Suzuki was the man between the sticks next season.
