The brilliant Jimmy Case won four league titles and five European trophies in just six years patrolling Liverpool’s right flank.
An apprentice electrician signed from non-league football, the Reds had found themselves a gem who would gladly run and tackle all day – and possessed one of the strongest shots in the game.
Across his first full campaign at Anfield, 1975-76, the midfielder played in 39 games in all competitions and contributed 12 goals to earn medals in the league and UEFA Cup.
Case and the rest of Bob Paisley’s squad were a whisker away from delivering a remarkable treble a season later.
He was again a vital figure throughout as Liverpool successfully defended their championship and hoisted aloft the club’s first European Cup in Rome.
A 2-1 defeat by Manchester United in the FA Cup final at Wembley – during which Case scored a screamer – prevented even greater glory for a vintage side.
The lad from Allerton was a natural favourite on the Kop for his endeavour and ability, with that fierceness in his boots also amassing 46 goals in the shirt.
Case was in the XI when the Reds retained the European Cup in 1978 and featured from the bench as they reclaimed it by beating Real Madrid three years later – his last appearance.
In between, he was involved in 74 of 84 league fixtures to aid Liverpool winning the title back-to-back again in 1978-79 and 1979-80.
“I always considered myself as a bread and butter player,” he said. “A fetcher and carrier to fill in the spaces on the right-hand side and work hard.
“Then you had the flair players like Kenny Dalglish and Terry McDermott, but they couldn’t play without us anyway.”
Having collected major honours at a rate of one every 27 appearances, Case said goodbye to the club with a move to Brighton & Hove Albion in 1981.
