Pape Matar Sarr was on the bench for Senegal as they suffered a 3-1 defeat to France in their opening game in World Cup Group I on Tuesday evening.
France forward Kylian Mbappe took centre stage in New Jersey, firing his side in front mid-way through the second half after controversially being denied a penalty, before wrapping up the win with a stunning long-range strike in added time.
Bradley Barcola had earlier made it 2-0 before Ibrahim Mbaye pulled one back for Senegal with an impressive individual goal just prior to Mbappe’s second.
Pape remained unused on the night but will hope to feature when his side takes on Norway in their second game of the tournament in the early hours of next Tuesday morning.
The central midfielder, 23, appeared in two of Senegal’s four games at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
