Leeds United icon Marcelo Bielsa won Elland Road hearts over with a gripping style of football that was ultimately successful in ending our 16-year wait for Premier League football.
It’s frustrating listening to mainstream pundits in the media, because knowledgable insight is worryingly uncommon.
That is even more so the case when discussing the nuances of what makes Marcelo Bielsa tick. Not only that, but also what made his time at Elland Road so glorious.
Joe Cole offers shocking, terrible verdict on Marcelo Bielsa’s success at Leeds United
As Bielsa’s Uruguay drew 1-1 with Saudi Arabia on Monday night, out comes the punditry trying to dissect the enigmatic Argentine’s philosophy.
Included in that is former Premier League and England man Joe Cole. The ex-Chelsea great is well aware he isn’t popular at Elland Road, and his poorly-researched comments on Bielsa only emphasise that.
Speaking on The Rest Is Football, Cole took aim at Bielsa and exposed his own terrible ignorance in the process. Ironically, Cole says he’s done his homework too, and it becomes apparent very quickly that his homework is F-grade.
“I think he’s a myth. I’ve done my homework; he’s been managing for over 30 years. He’s won three Argentinian titles,” Cole said.
“He won the Olympics but that’s a youth tournament, and won the Championship with Leeds. Leeds fans won’t be happy; I have no plans on going there any time soon. Guardiola has given him the big write up.
“Pep says ‘oh he’s the God’. For me, he sits on a bucket and doesn’t do much else. Three titles in 30 years, not for me. A massive reputation but he’s never done a sustained period where he’s a proper manager.”
Joe Cole exposes his lack of knowledge on Marcelo Bielsa and Leeds United
The fact that his opening line is ‘I’ve done my homework’ is absolutely staggering.
Because, he proceeds to make a bunch of useless comments that underline the fact he does not have the slightest clue what he’s talking about.
It’s par for the course for these pundits talking about Bielsa though. They’ve not experienced what it’s like to watch Bielsa transform not only a stagnant club, but the city around it too.
Leeds wouldn’t be where we are if not for what Bielsa did during his time in charge. The fact he’s still revered around West Yorkshire should be enough proof. But, I wouldn’t expect Cole to put in the effort to understand why.
There’s a reason that virtually every club where Bielsa has made his mark, those fans continue to idolise him long after he’s gone. Cole, though, couldn’t grasp that from his homework, he must’ve ran out of crayons.
