Leeds United’s Gabriel Gudmundsson helped Sweden open their World Cup campaign with a 5-1 win over Tunisia, but Swedish media stopped short of placing him among the team’s standout performers.
The defender received a respectable assessment after what was described by FotbollSkanalen as a clearly satisfactory performance, with his recent illness and an early substitution providing important context.

Shiny new transfer kitty incoming!
Sweden’s dominant victory ensured there were plenty of eye-catching performances across the pitch, but Gudmundsson’s contribution was viewed as dependable. He was given a 3/5 rating after analysis.
The verdict described the Leeds star’s performance as a clearly satisfactory performance. That assessment reflected a player who fulfilled his responsibilities while others grabbed the headlines this morning.
Gabriel Gudmundsson’s defensive work drew the most praise
The strongest positive comments centred on Gudmundsson’s work at the back. The assessment specifically praised his defensive control, highlighting how he helped Sweden remain comfortable.

He also contributed going forward through his runs out wide, providing width as Sweden repeatedly pushed Tunisia onto the defensive. It was the type of balanced display coaches value.
The only significant criticism attached to Gudmundsson’s performance related to the goal conceded. The player ratings suggested he could perhaps have prevented the cross that eventually led to Tunisia’s goal.

That view was echoed elsewhere, with another Swedish publication pointing to mistakes involving Gudmundsson and Lagerbielke during the move. Even so, it was a relatively minor observation.
Recent illness helps explain his afternoon
Gudmundsson’s display came after a disrupted build-up to the tournament opener. The defender featured despite recently battling illness in the days leading up to the game.

That background appeared relevant as the match wore on. Swedish media noted that he signalled for a substitution himself after just over an hour, while subsequent reporting said the issue wasn’t serious.
The overall verdict from Sweden was clear. Gudmundsson played an important role in a convincing opening victory and produced a reliable display, but his fitness situation and a small defensive question mark meant the performance was viewed as solid rather than exceptional.
Brenden Aaronson, Ao Tanaka and Noah Okafor all remained unused substitutes as the USA picked up a 4-1 win over Paraguay, while Switzerland and Japan drew their games against Qatar and the Netherlands.
