Manchester City defender Josko Gvardiol is set to sign a new contract at the club.
Gvardiol had attracted interest from top sides such as Bayern Munich but The Athletic reported earlier on Monday that the 24-year-old intended to stay in Manchester and was considering a new contract offer.
The Croatia international, though, was limited to 25 appearances in all competitions during the 2025-26 campaign after fracturing the tibia in his right leg in January, sidelining him for four months. He returned to feature in two of City’s final three games of the campaign, and was named in Zlatko Dalic’s World Cup squad for this summer’s tournament, with Croatia beginning their World Cup campaign on Wednesday.
Gvardiol joined City from RB Leipzig in a €90million (now £77.8m; $104m) deal in the summer of 2023. He signed a five-year contract that runs until 2028.
Gvardiol has made 122 appearances for the club, providing 13 goals and 10 assists and winning the Premier League, FA Cup and Carabao Cup. He was named City’s player of the season for 2024-25.
City are entering a summer of transition, with manager Pep Guardiola departing at the end of the campaign after a decade in charge. The Athletic reported former Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca is expected to be appointed his successor.
Long-serving midfielder Bernardo Silva and defender John Stones are leaving the club this summer following the expiry of their contracts.
‘A huge relief’
Analysis by Manchester City correspondent Sam Lee
News that Gvardiol is signing a new deal at City should be considered especially good news for the club because, unlike in many cases of renewed contracts, there had been some prospect of losing him.
Gvardiol had been considering his options amid interest from some of Europe’s biggest clubs and had been tempted by the idea of a move this summer, but it was also true that he was always happy with life at City and in Manchester, and last week he decided that the best thing for his future would be to stay where he is.
There is uncertainty around several City players this summer, meaning that they will probably have a busier transfer window than they may have planned for, so it will be a huge relief to not have to worry about replacing one of their centre-backs, especially as it would be nigh-on impossible to find a replacement with anywhere near the potential of Gvardiol.
