Newcastle United should push for Diomande amid Leeds interest

Position not high on agenda but £43m fee too good to pass up

Why Diomande would be the perfect fit for Newcastle

Newcastle United’s list of needs this summer is rather long. A couple of new goalkeepers, which has got off to a good start with the Ewen Jaouen signing, a centre-midfielder, a left-winger and a couple of full-backs for good measure.

If it landed at Santa’s doorstep, he would almost certainly put the Magpies on the naughty list for asking for too much.

But if Newcastle United do manage to address all of those gaps while also handling any potential departures that may appear in their blind spot, there is an extra position in the small print that could do with a little rebuff in the near future.

That position is centre-back. Fabian Schar has been handed an extra year on his contract to tide Eddie Howe over, but the Swiss is now 34 years of age and is inevitably coming to the end of his career. Dan Burn is the other secondary option, but the England international is also 34 years of age.

That means that there is a distinct lack of viable options behind Malick Thiaw and Sven Botman who match the escalating ambitions of the football club heading into next season.

The best-case scenario, at least from the fan’s point of view, is signing a shiny new asset to really put the cherry on top of the hopefully exceptional transfer window that will soon ensue.

And, as it happens, the perfect market opportunity to do exactly that is presenting itself right now. The issue is that Newcastle United’s recruitment team may be too preoccupied to notice before it’s too late.

Ousmane Diomande to Leeds progressing

The man in question is Sporting CP’s Ousmane Diomande, a player the Magpies have been scouting and tracking for some time now.

But it isn’t Newcastle who is in the driving seat to secure his services. According to reputable Portuguese outlet A Bola, Leeds United are currently in talks to sign the Ivory Coast international.

Leeds are reportedly willing to offer up to £35m plus £8m in add-ons for his services, a fee that would mark a very reasonable price for a top talent.

There are a lot of other Premier League clubs who have been linked with Diomande over the past couple of seasons. Arsenal, Crystal Palace and, of course, Newcastle United have all tracked the centre-back at different points.

But rumours of a move for Diomande to any of those clubs had gone somewhat quiet amid the usual cacophony of speculation that arises as a transfer window nears.

That has led to Leeds emerging as early frontrunners, with the Whites aiming to get an under-the-radar deal done before others have a chance to join the bidding.

Why Newcastle can’t afford to pass up Diomande

Even though Leeds have taken the early mantle and it seems like a bid could be imminent, Newcastle simply can’t ignore this opportunity.

As discussed, the club will need a centre-back soon anyway. So why not prevent that need from escalating to a full-blown crisis by signing a player whom the club have heavily scouted over the past few years and know almost everything about?

A total fee of £43m for a player with the quality of the 22-year-old feels like a steal in the current market. Diomande already has the physical profile to succeed in the Premier League, with a big frame and some freakish athleticism that would suit him well in an Eddie Howe side.

Diomande may need some slight tweaks to his technical game, but he has the hallmarks of a line-breaking, modern centre-half who could grow into an absolute monster if given the chance in England.

Letting him go to Leeds without a fight would be criminal from Newcastle’s point of view. Of course, a deal may not work given the other areas the Magpies need to upgrade, but there must at least be an exploration of a possible agreement if the Magpies’ ambitions are as high and mighty as they claim.
