We’re examining the downfall of Jadon Sancho, who went from prodigy to pariah during his dismal five-year spell as a Manchester United player

Jadon Sancho is finally set to be released from his Manchester United contract, officially bringing the curtain down on a massively disappointing spell at Old Trafford. Despite retaining the option to extend his deal by a further 12 months, United confirmed earlier this month that Sancho will leave the club when his contract expires on June 30.
When the dazzling winger first arrived at the Theatre of Dreams, he was widely regarded as one of the most exciting young talents in world football. Supporters expected him to take the Premier League by storm and establish himself as a global superstar.
Back then, it was taken as an absolute certainty that Sancho would be in England’s 2026 World Cup squad. Instead, as the summer tournament gets underway, the forward finds himself without a club and searching for a way to salvage his stalling career.
His time in Manchester was marred by inconsistent performances, managerial clashes and an inability to replicate his sensational Bundesliga form, leaving fans to wonder where it all went so wrong. Here, we take a closer look at Sancho’s staggering United downfall, from his high-profile arrival to a toxic fallout that would ultimately seal his fate.

Blockbuster arrival
Sancho arrived at Manchester United from Dortmund in the summer of 2021 for a staggering £73million fee. Expectations were sky-high as fans anticipated the arrival of a generational talent capable of transforming their frontline.
However, the winger completely failed to hit the ground running under then-manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. He struggled to adapt to the physical demands of the Premier League and rarely showed glimpses of his true potential.
Falling out with Erik ten Hag
The real turning point in his United career came when he suffered a severe breakdown in relations with Erik ten Hag. Following a defeat to Arsenal, the Dutch manager publicly stated that Sancho was dropped because his training standards simply were not good enough.
Sancho immediately took to social media to furiously deny these accusations, claiming that he was being made a scapegoat. This blatant act of defiance caused the feud to escalate incredibly quickly behind the scenes, with Sancho infamously refusing to apologise for his online outburst.

‘Kicked out of WhatsApp group’
The situation reached a truly toxic low point when Ten Hag decided to completely remove the forward from the senior squad. The manager allegedly took the drastic step of booting Sancho from the United first-team WhatsApp group, which staff used to send essential updates.
His exile extended far beyond digital communications, as the winger was totally barred from using all first-team facilities. He was even prohibited from entering the senior canteen, forcing him to eat his meals entirely alone or alongside academy players.
Loan spells
Desperate for playing time, Sancho was eventually shipped back to Dortmund on loan, where he enjoyed a brief period of initial success. He managed to rediscover a fraction of his lost confidence in Germany, but it was not enough to secure a permanent transfer.
A subsequent loan move to Chelsea provided a decent spell of form, but the London club ultimately decided against keeping him on a full-time basis. He then endured a remarkably poor spell at Aston Villa, failing to make any significant impact during his time in the West Midlands.

Released
With no realistic route back into the United first team, the club finally decided to cut their losses entirely this month. Sancho’s impending release will officially end a miserable five-year association with the Red Devils.
The decision marks a sad conclusion to a transfer that initially promised so much. After scoring 50 times in 137 games in Germany, Sancho has managed just 18 in 163 since returning to England. Despite being a key member of England’s Euro 2020 side, Sancho hasn’t played for his country since 2021, highlighting just how disastrous his United tenure has been.
What’s next?
The once-revered attacker now faces the daunting task of finding a new home to rebuild his severely damaged reputation. A move abroad is probable, with the likes of PSV, Besiktas and former club Dortmund linked with him.
Various mid-table clubs in the Premier League have quietly registered their interest too, while a lucrative switch to the Saudi Pro League is also a realistic option. Wherever Sancho lands next, he must dramatically reinvent himself if he hopes to ever get close to fulfilling his early career promise.
