Manchester United could be reunited with former head coach Ruben Amorim as he closes in on a new job. The Portuguese coach has held talks about taking over at AC Milan.
It’s reported that Amorim is the leading candidate for the San Siro job, following the exit of Massimiliano Allegri. He is reported to have held direct talks over the role.
He is said to be the top contender ahead of the likes of Oliver Glasner, Mauricio Pochettino and Sebastian Hoeness. An appointment could see him link up with another former United boss, Ralf Rangnick, who is reportedly being considered for the head of football role.

Should Amorim become AC Milan manager, it won’t be long until he comes up against United for the first time since his exit. The Reds have confirmed that they will take on the Italian club in their final pre-season friendly on Saturday, August 15 in Wroclaw, Poland.
The meeting will come eight months after Amorim was sacked as United head coach back in January. The decision came after a remarkable rant from the coach about the breakdown of his relationships with club bosses.
“I just want to say that I’m going to be the manager of this team, not just the coach. I was really clear on that,” he said. “That is going to finish in 18 months, and then everyone is going to move on.
“That was the deal. That is my job, not to be a coach. If people cannot handle the Gary Nevilles and the criticises of everything, we need to change the club. No, no guys, I would say that I came here to be the manager of Manchester United, not to be the coach. Every department, the scouting department, the sport director needs to do their job. I will do mine for 18 months and then we move on. Thank you, guys.”

The 41-year-old was in charge at Old Trafford for just over a year, having joined in November 2024. In his 64 matches at the helm, United won 25, lost 23 and drew 15.
He was replaced by Michael Carrick, who arrived on an initial interim basis. The former United midfielder helped to turn the season around and secure qualification for the Champions League next season.
In his 17 matches in charge, United won 12, drew three and lost two. They finished the campaign in third place in the Premier League table.
Carrick’s role has since been made permanent, with the head coach a big part of preparations for the new season. Before the match against AC Milan, United face Wrexham, Rosenborg, Atletico Madrid and PSG in pre-season.
