The future of James Trafford is a subject that will dominate the summer for Manchester City. It would be a major surprise if Trafford didn’t find a new home during the summer transfer window. Trafford is too good to be Gianluigi Donnarumma’s understudy, and barring a change in the goalkeeping structure at City, Donnarumma will start next season as Manchester City’s first-choice goalkeeper. Where James Trafford ends up if he is to leave Manchester City hasn’t been immediately clear. Now a solid contender to sign James Trafford has emerged, and it is a move that could be ideal for the England international.

David Ornstein has reported for The Athletic that Newcastle United have contacted Manchester City to express their interest in signing James Trafford. Ornstein also reports that despite Newcastle having signed young goalkeeper Ewan Jaouen from Reims, they are still in the market for a number-one goalkeeper. James Trafford is the primary target to fulfill that particular role. At this stage, negotiations over a potential deal for James Trafford haven’t begun between Newcastle United and Manchester City. Lastly, Ornstein reports that James Trafford will not make a decision about his future until after the World Cup.

There may be an opportunity for James Trafford to become Manchester City’s number-one goalkeeper. Enzo Maresca prefers his keepers to play a prominent role in the buildup from the back, and James Trafford is ahead of Gianluigi Donnarumma in this regard. Also, Trafford is a quality shot-stopper who is still in the infancy of his career. However, the more realistic scenario is that Donnarumma will remain Manchester City’s number-one keeper. If that proves to be the case, Trafford is likely to leave Manchester City. A club like Newcastle may be ideal for Trafford.

Newcastle United are a big club, and they’ll be expected or hoping to push toward the top end of the table next season. Eddie Howe’s side had a disappointing 2025-26 season and are seemingly looking to rebuild their squad. They have lost Anthony Gordon, but the Magpies are looking to rejuvenate their squad. Trafford could come in and be Newcastle’s first-choice goalkeeper and establish himself as a key player at St. James’ Park. That may be an option that appeals to Trafford and also may be one that sets him up to become England’s number-one goalkeeper.

Newcastle United have made their interest known to Manchester City that they are eager to sign James Trafford this summer. It would be a shock if Trafford were at City next season. A move to Newcastle could be the one that allows Trafford to be the number-one goalkeeper, which is an opportunity he is clearly craving.
