Leeds United look as though they will do everything they can to strengthen Daniel Farke’s attacking options ahead of the new Premier League season.
According to a recent report from Beren Cross in The Athletic, a number ten, as well as a left-footed right winger, will be high up on Leeds’ list of priorities when it comes to recruitment this summer.
This would effectively spell the end of Willy Gnonto’s Elland Road career. However, the Whites will likely make a handsome profit on the young Italian winger.
Fulham offer Harry Wilson a new contract
However, one of United’s Premier League rivals are doing all they can to prevent Leeds from securing a player who fits the exact profile they are looking for.
The Harry Wilson to Leeds saga dragged on throughout last summer. United narrowly missing out on the Welshman, who is a left-footer who typically plays out on the right but can also operate as a number ten, on deadline day.
This would go on to become an agonising close call for Leeds. Of course, Wilson went on to enjoy an exceptional season at Fulham after his move to Leeds fell through. He scored ten goals and provided seven assists in 36 Premier League appearances.
Naturally, plenty of clubs are interested in securing Wilson’s signature. The 29-year-old’s current deal at Fulham set to expire at the end of the month.
However, Fulham recently posted on their official X account that they have offered Wilson a new contract when providing an update regarding the contract situations of some of their players.
Alongside Leeds, TEAMtalk’s latest report suggests Aston Villa and Everton are amongst the other clubs interested in signing Wilson as Fulham make their last-ditch attempt to stop him leaving for free this summer.
Leeds United will be kicking themselves for not securing deal for Harry Wilson last summer
Nobody could have anticipated the season that Wilson would have gone on to have. That said, the fact that Leeds were on the verge of securing his services for a cut price of just £10million is one that will surely haunt the 49ers.
Whilst they still may be able to land him for free this summer, it will seemingly be an uphill battle. Aston Villa reportedly lead the race for the winger, as TEAMtalk’s report claims that Unai Emery is a huge admirer of Wilson.
However, Leeds’ advantage when it comes to potentially signing Wilson is the strong core of Welsh players they possess, with Ethan Ampadu, Joe Rodon, Karl Darlow, and Dan James potentially convincing Wilson to link up in West Yorkshire with his fellow countrymen.
“(I’m) trying to sell it to everyone,” Ampadu told The Athletic of trying to convince Wilson and others. “It’s a pretty easy sell. Everyone knows how special a place Leeds is, but whenever we get asked how our time is at Leeds, when we’re with Wales, we speak about it so glowingly.”
But with Wilson smack bang in the middle of the prime years of his career, the prospect of playing in the Champions League at Villa may be too good to turn down.
We desperately need some more quality out on the right wing to replace Brenden Aaronson, but unless the 49ers offer Wilson a contract he simply cannot refuse, it looks as though they will need to turn their attention to other targets.
