Chelsea have their new manager in place – Xabi Alonso starts work in less than a month, and fans couldn’t be any more excited about it.
For a long time following the departure of Liam Rosenior, Andoni Iraola was favourite to get the Chelsea job. In the end, he’s gone to Liverpool, with former Red Alonso ending up at Chelsea. So what happened?

According to the Athletic’s piece about Iraola’s appointment, “there had been discussions with Chelsea” about appointing the Bournemouth coach. However, “there were concerns about the radical departure his style of football would represent from the work of previous managers Enzo Maresca and Liam Rosenior at Stamford Bridge.”
There may be some truth in that – but we’re not sure Alonso’s tactics are that similar to Maresca’s or Rosenior’s either. It’s going to be a fascinating season seeing how the two coaches and their different styles get on at their new clubs, with both potentially planned some quite radical changes.
It will be interesting to see where we stand in a year’s time…

Carlton Cole has an interesting solution for what to do with Liam Delap this summer.
Chelsea have a whole lot of housekeeping to do this summer – there are ten players who could be sold, and it’s just a question of how many buyers can be found.
