Think back to Tony Yeboah and the likelihood is you’ll recall the Leeds United cult hero netting some of the Premier League’s finest-ever goals.
There’s ongoing discussion about which of his spectacular long-range efforts, scored against Wimbledon and Liverpool within weeks of each other, stands out as superior – but the former Ghana international has a clear preference.
Yeboah has often spoken about his peak years at Elland Road, claiming consecutive goals of the month at the beginning of the 1995-96 campaign.
Since it’s his 60th birthday, let’s settle this! Which Tony Yeboah thunderbolt was better?
“Without doubt, that was the best goal I scored,” he said, revealing he preferred the goal against Liverpool. “The Wimbledon goal comes close but we won that game 4-2. Liverpool were the team I supported growing up, and it was the only goal of the game. It meant more.”
The forward netted 24 Premier League goals across just over two seasons at Leeds, departing the club in the opening weeks of 1996-97 following a personality clash with incoming manager George Graham. He returned to the Bundesliga, joining Hamburg where he went on to make 100 appearances before rounding off his playing days at Qatari outfit Al-Gharafa SC.
Yet the former striker has admitted to having certain regrets about the direction his career ultimately took.
“Playing for Leeds was the best time of my life,” he added. “Looking back, maybe I should have stayed there for the rest of my career.”
