The British star was best known for roles in Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Ted Lasso.
Head passed away peacefully following complications from pneumonia, surrounded by his family, in a statement shared by his daughters Emily and Daisy.
His death comes just six months after his partner Sarah Fisher, the mother of his children, passed away at the age of 61.
Alongside a long and successful acting career, and like Ms Fisher, a long-term ambassador for multiple animal welfare charities, Head was known for his work supporting animal welfare -including in Dorset.
He was a patron of Margaret Green Animal Rescue, a well-established charity with centres in Church Knowle and Winterborne Kingston, which rescues and rehomes animals across Dorset and Devon.
Founded in 1965, the charity helps dogs, cats, horses, farm animals and small pets, many of which have been neglected or abandoned, giving them care and a chance at a new home.
More than 1,000 animals are rescued and rehomed by the charity each year, and its work has made it a key part of Dorset’s animal welfare community.
Head’s involvement reflected a lifelong love of animals and Sarah Fisher was also a well-known animal behaviour expert and campaigner.
Over the years, Margaret Green Animal Rescue has attracted a number of high-profile patrons, with Head among those helping to raise awareness of its work.
Head lived just over the border in Somerset, making his home in Bath.
Born in London in 1954, he built a career spanning nearly five decades across television, film and theatre.
He first became a familiar face in the UK through the hit Nescafé Gold Blend adverts in the 1980s before going on to achieve international fame.
His most iconic role came as Rupert Giles in Buffy the Vampire Slayer, which ran from 1997 to 2003 and made him a household name worldwide.
He later appeared in a string of popular shows including Merlin, Little Britain and Ted Lasso, where he played the wealthy club owner Rupert Mannion.
Throughout his career, he was known for his distinctive voice, warmth on screen and lasting impact on audiences.
Margaret Green Animal Rescue continues to care for vulnerable animals across the county, a cause close to Head’s heart.
His death has been described by his family as a huge loss, with tributes starting to pour in from fans and colleagues around the world.
