Tom Heaton has signed a new contract at Manchester United

Tom Heaton has signed a new contract at Manchester United that will see the 40-year-old goalkeeper extend his second spell at Old Trafford into a sixth season.

The former England international is a United academy graduate, and although he’s made just three appearances for the club since signing on a free transfer in the summer of 2020, his presence behind the scenes remains invaluable.

Heaton will remain as the third-choice goalkeeper next season, with Andre Onana on the transfer list after returning from his loan spell at Trabzonspor, and Altay Bayindir set to return to Turkey.

He last played a competitive game for the club in February 2023, but still sets high standards in training and has forged a close bond with new No.1 Senne Lammens after the 23-year-old joined from Royal Antwerp last summer.

Explaining the decision to hand Heaton a new contract, director of football Jason Wilcox said: “We are delighted that Tom is continuing for another year. Everyone is well aware of the importance of his leadership and professionalism within the group.

“Tom has played a key role in helping to support Senne throughout his first season in the Premier League; his constant dedication and mentality set a fantastic standard for our goalkeeping group.”

Heaton has worked under six different managers since returning to the club while Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was in charge, and he is confident the club are now on the right track under Michael Carrick.

“It is a huge honour to continue to represent Manchester United,” he said. “You can feel the determination and ambition of everyone throughout the club to keep pushing for success.

“I am really excited to play my role in driving us forward and helping the group to compete for the biggest honours.”
