Norwegian midfielder Travis Hernes has left Newcastle United and joined FC Groningen on a permanent basis following a season-long loan spell with the Eredivisie club.
Having initially struggled to break into the side, the 20-year-old made 11 appearances for the Dutch club this season, helping them to a ninth placed finish and he started in their Europa Conference League play-off defeat to Ajax.
As such, he has done enough to earn a permanent move to the Euroborg Stadium after Groningen triggered the option in his loan deal and he has signed an four-year contract with the club. He follows Anthony Gordon in making a summer transfer from the club.

Hernes joined Newcastle in September 2023 from Shrewsbury Town, and represented both the club’s under-18 and under-21 sides.
The Norwegian youth international scored on his professional debut in the EFL Trophy against Wolverhampton Wanderers and was twice named on the first team bench during his three years at the club.

Hernes was an unused substitute in Newcastle’s 2-0 win over Fulham at Craven Cottage in the FA Cup fourth round in January 2024, as well as a 3-1 win over Aston Villa just a few days later.
He was also part of the first team’s pre-season training camp in Austria last summer before he made the initial loan move to Groningen.
A Newcastle United club statement read: “Everybody at Newcastle United would like to thank Travis for his contribution to the club and wishes him well for the future.”
The announcement continues Newcastle’s work in rebuilding both their first-team squad and the reserves set-up. Anthony Gordon sealed a move to Barcelona last week, while the retained list has seen several senior and academy players depart including John Ruddy, Max Thompson, Emil Krafth, Kieran Trippier, Alfie Harrison, James Taylor, Joe Brayson, Thomas Bryant and Darren Palmer.
