At around 4.30pm it began to rain in Ipswich, before it turned into torrential rain with a smattering of large hailstones.
At the time, Suffolk Highways said: “Please travel with care as parts of Suffolk are experiencing spells of heavy rain.”
Some of the worst-impacted areas in the town were on Wherstead Road, under the railway bridge.
It is not the first time that Wherstead Road has flooded, with it often under water when there is heavy rain.
Videos from the scene showed cars broken down in flood water and others queuing on either side of the blockage.
One video showed a bus travelling along Maidenhall Approach, where it passed a car stuck in the road as passengers cheered.
Other bus services were diverted due to the flooding.
Other impacted areas included on Holywells Road, where water covered the road above the kerb stones.
In the centre of Ipswich, The Mannings pub caught the torrential downpour at The Cornhill, with market traders attempting to pack up after getting caught out.
A spokesman for Anglian Water said: “We are aware of reports of flooding in the Rope Walk area of Ipswich and understand how concerning that can be for customers.
“The intense rainfall we’ve seen can overwhelm surface water drainage very quickly, which can lead to flash flooding.”
“A spokesman for Suffolk Highways said: “Parts of Suffolk experienced flash flooding yesterday evening after an intense period of rainfall. This caused some drainage systems to become temporarily overwhelmed. Once the heaviest rain subsided, drainage systems worked effectively to clear standing water and floodwater from affected areas.
“With further rain forecast today, motorists are urged to drive according to the conditions and never attempt to drive through floodwater. Where possible, please use alternative routes.”
