Rutherford’s decision comes after spending the 2025/26 season at Portsmouth, joining them after her departure from the Blues last summer.

She was part of Joe Sheehan’s side, who won the Southern Premier Division title and promotion to the WSL 2 for the first time in her sole campaign at Town.

The attacking midfielder began her career at Millwall, making her senior debut in 2017 before having spells at Bristol City and Charlton Athletic.

She also won cap for England at various youth levels up to Under-19s.

In a statement confirming his retirement, Rutherford said: “To my football family. After a decade of great sacrifice and commitment to the game I fell in love with as a young girl, the time has come for me to retire from professional football.

“Football is, and always will be a massive part of my life but I’m taking the decision to explore other opportunities whilst enjoying playing on a part-time basis – not the end, just something new. I’ve given this decision great thought and am content with needing this for my own happiness.

“I’ve had the honour of representing England and experienced playing football at the very highest level. Along the way I’ve made so many amazing memories and made friends for life, so long may that continue. I want to fall back in love with the game and play without judgement or pressure and feel this will give me exactly that.

“Thank you to all that have played a part in my journey and to all the fans, football wouldn’t be what it is without you. Excited for what’s next.”
