Southampton City Council is in the middle of carrying out 47 projects across the city, with funding for parks, play areas, multi-use games areas (MUGAs) and skate parks.
John Savage, Labour councillor responsible for environment and net zero, highlighted the programme of work at this month’s annual general meeting of the council.
Cllr Savage said: “Whenever we speak to anybody in the city, they are always so delighted with the amount of green space that we’ve got and play spaces.
“I’m pleased to report great investment and refurbishment of our green spaces.
“£374,000 has been spent on 12 completed projects.
“There is another £1.145 million on a further 10 projects which are in progress and will be finished soon, and another £2.9 million to be spent on 25 future projects.
“This is really good investment for the people in Southampton and we know it is so important for people’s health and wellbeing and mental health to be able to enjoy those green spaces fully.”
The council said investment in green spaces is spread across multiple wards in the city.
Completed projects include refurbishment of Coxford play area and The Venny play area, new swings at Puffin play area, Cobden Meadows, Sullivan rec, Watts Close, new equipment at Glebe Road play area, Golden Grove and Ashurst Close, improvements to goal ends at Shirley MUGA and accessibility improvements at Weston Shore café.
The council has also carried out a citywide tree planting scheme.
Work is ongoing at Sturminster MUGA, Paignton Road, Houndwell, Peartree and Lawn Road play areas, Hoglands Skate Park, Woodmill Bay, Lordsdale SANG pathways, !2 Acres green space and Paignton Road open space.
Future works, which have funding approved, include Common play area, Eddie’s Play Trail, Mayflower and Threefield, Sturminster, Riverside, St James and Mayfield play areas, Riverside and Shirley Pond skate parks, multiple MUGAs, and further tree planting and access improvements.
