Martin Paterson’s side beat Salford City 3-0 in the fourth-tier play-off final yesterday, thanks to goals from Alassana Jatta, Lucas Ness and Jodi Jones, to seal promotion to League One for the first time in 11 years.

Another ex-Blue in Luke Garbutt was captaining Karl Robinson’s Salford side, who were comfortably beaten in the sweltering sun.

Bennetts came on as a 87th minute sub for the Magpies as they earned their second promotion in three years.

The 27-year-old winger moved to Meadow Lane last summer to return to English football for the first time since his loan spell at Portman Road in the 2020/21 season.

He was on loan from German side Borussia Mönchengladbach, making 30 appearances for Town, scoring once.
