Brighton 0-3 Man United might just be the strangest day there has ever been as a Seagulls supporter. The Albion were truly atrocious, outplayed and outfought by a Red Devils side with nothing to play for. It was one of the worst 90 minutes of the season and that is saying something, given this team went on a dreadful run of one win in 13 matches.
Yet after the full time whistle, nobody cared. Other results meant Brighton finished eighth. Conference League football will be played at the Amex next season. Providing Brighton come through a qualifying round. Which based on this performance is, admittedly, not guaranteed.
The Albion would not beat AFC Varndeanians at Withdean playing like they did in Brighton 0-3 Man United. Let alone Zrinjski Mosta away in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Europe was very publicly stated as the aim for Brighton at the start of the season. Being in the fight for it saw Fabian Hurzeler awarded a new contract.
Whisper it quietly, but the Albion have lost two games out of three since Hurzeler signed that deal. Last week’s 1-0 defeat at The Leeds United combined with Brighton 0-3 Man United means the season has finished with a limp rather than a swagger.
Whilst any sort of European football is clearly not to be sniffed at, the fact Brighton had potential Champions League qualification in their own hands and definitely could have qualified for the Europa League with a win over either Leeds or Manchester United has to go down as a disappointing end to this 2025-26 season.
Liverpool do Brighton a big favour
Not that anyone wanted to talk about that once the full time whistle blew 270 miles away from the Amex at Anfield. A 1-1 draw between Liverpool and Brentford meant the Bees did not overtake the Albion.
Brighton 0-3 Man United finished beforehand. The players had bottled it. Now all eyes were glued to mobile phones for updates from Merseyside.

When the draw was confirmed, Albion fans celebrated as wildly as any goal scored this season. Finally, there was something to cheer on an afternoon when Brighton registered just two shots on target.
And if you needed any reminder over what a big achievement the Albion qualifying for European football is regardless of the competition, you just needed to have a celebratory beer outside the West Stand afterwards and clock some of the people heading home.
Mark McGhee was one. A man who was given Doug Loft from Hastings United as his marquee signing of the January transfer window 20 years ago because Brighton had so little money.
Watching McGhee give a little wave whilst several hundred Seagulls supporters sung “Drinking pints of whiskey” at him was easily my favourite bit of the day.
Then Stuart Storer ambled past. Almost unnoticed. The bloke who scored the final goal at the Goldstone Ground to lift Brighton off the bottom of the Football League in the penultimate game of the 1996-97 season.
No Storer goal, no final day showdown at Hereford, probably no escape from relegation to the Conference (Vauxhall rather than Europa) and no Brighton & Hove Albion continuing to exist.
The memory of being homeless and broke 30 years ago is why Brighton fans can never take any sort of European football for granted.
Brighton 0-3 Man United done and dusted in 49 minutes
Which explains why the football being absolutely awful has gone under the radar a fair bit. United had the game won inside 49 minutes thanks mainly to Bruno Fernandes.
Chasing the outright record for number of assists in a single Premier League season since Sky Sports invented football in 1992, Fernandes swung over a corner headed home by Patrick Dorgu.
That was on 33 minutes. Anyone requiring liquid refreshments to cool down and who left their seats early before half time to secure them would have missed the second United goal 60 seconds before the break.
A slick passing move carved through the Brighton defence far too easily as Mason Mount and Amad Diallo teed up Bryan Mbeumo for a tap in to double the lead.
And anyone lingering a little too long over those half time beers missed the third United goal. Just four minutes of the second half had been played when Dorgu turned provider for Fernandes.
All eyes were then glued on proceedings elsewhere. Sunderland beating Chelsea pushed Brighton down to eighth. Unfortunately, the Albion’s B side were unable to force an equaliser at the Stadium of Light. The one time you want Chelsea to win and they bottle it.
The draw at Anfield though confirmed Brighton as eighth place finishers. The joint-second highest placing in Albion history.
The challenge ahead of Conference League football
Hurzeler and the players soaked up the applause of the crowd on the traditional end of season lap of honour afterwards. Never before have Brighton supporters celebrated and cheered a 3-0 defeat so wildly.
For some of those players, it is likely the last time we will see them in Brighton shirts at the Amex. Joel Veltman, Solly March, James Milner and Adam Webster are all out of contract.
Jan Paul van Hecke, Bart Verbruggen and Carlos Baleba are certain to be the subject of summer transfer interest. Champions League or Europa League qualification might have been enough to tempt them into staying.
It is doubtful Conference League is. Even if the Albion will have a decent shot of winning the tournament. Just like West Ham United, Chelsea and potentially that lot up the A23 all have done.
Decision-makers at Brighton will need to think carefully over who they retain and sell. The 2023-24 Europa League season was a learning curve for the Albion.
Injuries stacked up with the added workload and Roberto De Zerbi did not have a squad with enough depth to cope. Selling Alexis Mac Allister and Moises Caicedo in the same transfer window without bringing in adequate midfield replacements was a massive issue.
All that is to worry about though. For now, Brighton fans can concentrate on Googling where Turan Tovu play and panicking over how many loyalty points will be needed to get one of the 500 tickets in the away end at Zimbru Chișinau.
We’re all going on a European tour.
