Leeds United midfielder Anton Stach has described the injury he sustained against Brighton & Hove Albion on Sunday as “unlucky” and is targeting a quick return.

The German was eventually taken off on a stretcher in the second half after Seagulls counterpart Carlos Baleba had landed on his leg following an aerial challenge, having initially tried to play after receiving lengthy on-pitch treatment.

Daniel Farke could not give a firm outlook on Stach post-match having not spoken to his medical department by the time he sat down with the press, but believed the issue was to do with his ankle.

The untimely injury comes just a few days before Julian Nagelsmann names his Germany World Cup squad, on Friday. The national team boss had handed Stach his first cap in nearly four years during March’s internationals.

His push for a place in the squad would likely encompass a rotation role given he featured for just 10 minutes against Switzerland and did not get on the pitch against Ghana in the last camp.

Farke is due to give a clearer update on the three-cap international, whom he has called one his key Leeds players, in Friday’s press conference – by which time it could be known whether the playmaker has been handed a World Cup ticket.

In the meantime, Stach has posted on his Instagram account, writing what are his first comments since being carried off at Elland Road. He said: “Could you smell the win at our last home game of the season?

“Thank you for the amazing support throughout the whole season. Unlucky to have been subbed off, but I’ll do everything to come back as quickly as possible. See you soon.”

Farke will also give the outlook on whether Pascal Struijk, Noah Okafor, Gabriel Gudmundsson, Jayden Bogle – all ruled out of Sunday’s win with setbacks – and Brenden Aaronson, who was forced off with a dead leg against Brighton, can feature against West Ham in the away season-closer on Sunday.
