The Saints are accused of sending an intern analyst to record a Middlesbrough training session ahead of their semi-final tie at the Riverside Stadium, which ended in a goalless draw.

The second leg at St. Mary’s ended in a 2-1 win for Tonda Eckert’s men in extra time, but it remains to be seen whether or not they will progress to the play-off final to face Hull City at Wembley.

The EFL have confirmed that an Independent Disciplinary Commission hearing will take place by Tuesday, May 19th, with the final set for Saturday, May 24th.

However, it has been stressed that details of the fixture – including the date – could still be changed, despite the fact that Hull and Southampton are due to put tickets on sale imminently. Fans of both clubs have been urged to read terms and conditions when buying tickets, accomodation and travel.

There are reportedly various punishments that Southampton could face if found guilty. A fine, like the one that Leeds United faced for spying on Derby County (£200k), is possible, although there was no direct rule to prevent it when that incident happened back in 2019.

A points deduction is also possible, but it may be difficult to implement if Southampton are promoted to the Premier League.

Of course, the Saints could be banned from playing the play-off final, which would likely see Middlesbrough take their place against Hull at Wembley.

The picture should become clearer in the coming days, but it still remains to be seen who will get the chance to join Coventry City and Ipswich Town in the Premier League.
