In December, townsfolk noticed the historic clock was showing the wrong time which led to Ipswich Borough Council revealing that it had broken.

However, after months without the beloved clock telling the time, it is set to be fixed and up and running in weeks.

An Ipswich Borough Council spokesperson said: “A fault has been identified with the clock mechanism, which is not unusual given its age.

“A bespoke replacement part has now been manufactured and is currently undergoing testing before being reinstalled.

“This is scheduled to take place during the first week of June, subject to no further issues arising.

“It holds significant historic value, being 150 years old and ordered in 1867 from the clockmakers Dent of London.

“Its mechanism shares a design similar to the one contained within the Elizabeth Tower at the Palace of Westminster, alongside Big Ben.

“It is controlled by a computer system to sync it to the Rugby radio clock signal, which ensures the pendulum is regularly adjusted to maintain accurate time.

“As such, it is quite an intricate device and requires careful analysis to identify the issue.”
