Tonda Eckert and Kim Hellberg had to be pulled apart following a fiery spat during Southampton’s semi-final play-off clash with Middlesbrough. After a goalless draw at the Riverside Stadium, the two squared-off for a reverse at St Mary’s on Tuesday evening.
It was the visitors who drew first blood, Riley McGree opening the scoring with a clever finish from inside the box. With potential promotion to the Premier League for 2026/27 riding on the result, the tension was palpable on the south coast.
And the atmosphere turned particularly incredibly ugly as the half-time interval approached. Luke Ayling was incensed as he found his way into Andy Madley’s book in the 38th minute for a cynical foul on a breaking Leo Scienza.

The Englishman threw his arms up in the air in protest as he marched toward the official, Madley turning his back unimpressed by the display as Boro captain Dael Fry tried to calm matters. Ayling then stormed toward Taylor Harwood-Bellis as he gave the Saints skipper a piece of his mind, before returning to Madley – furious in demeanour as he remonstrated with the official.
Madley told Ayling to move on before he approached Eckert and Hellbrerg for a word in a bid to cool tensions. However, matters boiled over once more when Eckert seemed displeased by what the official was saying.
Hellberg was then spotted raising his voice toward Eckert, pointing his finger at him as he took a step forward. The Saints’ manager was quick to pull the Swede’s arm out of his personal space, as the fourth official and Madley stepped in to separate the two.
Eckert was also spotted shoving his shoulder in Hellberg’s direction, before walking away from the furore. When play eventually resumed, Ross Stewart ensured that Southampton went into the break on level terms, nodding home from close range before wheeling off in celebration.

As the half-time whistle sounded, Callum Brittain was spotted speaking with Madley as he walked off the pitch, before Hellberg walked over to tell his player to leave the situation, following him down the tunnel.
Giving an update on the situation on Sky Sports at half-time, meanwhile, Sky Sports reporter Jonathan Oakes explained the reason Ayling felt so aggrieved. He said: “There were words exchanged between Luke Ayling and Taylor Harwood-Bellis.
“Ayling says the words that Harwood-Bellis used towards him were of a discriminatory nature, and other players around heard the comment as well. It prompted the referee Andy Madley to speak to both managers. Madley says he will be reporting the incident.”
It comes as the atmosphere between the two sides was already incredibly frosty before a ball was kicked, as a result of Southampton’s alleged breach of EFL rules. The Saints are claimed to have video recorded a Boro training session ahead of Saturday’s initial meeting, with the EFL charging the club on Friday.

Sky has upgraded its Ultimate TV and Sky Sports bundle to now include HBO Max, Netflix, Disney+, discovery+ and Hayu, as well as 135 channels and full Sky coverage of the Premier League and EFL.
Sky broadcasts more than 1,400 live matches across the Premier League, EFL and more with at least 215 live from the top flight alongside Formula 1, darts and golf.
A statement read: “Southampton Football Club has today been charged with a breach of EFL Regulations, and the matter will be referred to an Independent Disciplinary Commission. This follows a request from the EFL for the Club’s observations after a complaint from Middlesbrough relating to alleged unauthorised filming on private property ahead of the two Clubs meeting in Saturday’s Sky Bet Championship Play-Off Semi-Final First Leg.
“The charges relate to the following Regulations: EFL Regulation 3.4, which requires Clubs to act towards each other with the utmost good faith; and EFL Regulation 127, which prohibits any Club from observing, or attempting to observe, another Club’s training session within 72 hours of a scheduled match between the two Clubs.
“Under EFL Regulations, Southampton would ordinarily have 14 days to respond to the charges. However, given the nature of the matter, the EFL will ask the Independent Disciplinary Commission to shorten the response period and to list a hearing at the earliest opportunity. The League will make no further comment whilst proceedings are ongoing.”
If found guilty, Southampton could be expunged from the play-offs, regardless of a win over Boro in Tuesday’s all-important second-leg. That would see Boro take on Hull City in the play-off final later this month.
