The Chelsea rumor mill has gone into overdrive about the prospect of Xabi Alonso becoming the next Chelsea manager head coach this summer. Of course, rumors and speculation are ultimately meaningless on their own, but there’s been enough volume to lend the notion at least some substance.

Perhaps the most promising report has come from The Times, who claim that not only have we held initial talks with the 44-year-old, but the outcome of those talks has been “encouraging”. Reports yesterday claimed that Alonso would be open to the possibility of joining Chelsea, but this might take that notion one step further (i.e. perhaps he’s not yet been discouraged by the idea of having to work under the BlueCo galaxy brain structures).

Other names remain in the picture — including Andoni Iraola and Marco Silva and “one other, as yet unnamed, candidate” — but we seem to be shooting our shot with Alonso, who appears to be the preferred candidate for most everyone concerned. So, welcome Filipe Luís?
