Sunderland vs Manchester United: Premier League preview
It’s been an extraordinary turnaround for Man United — and yet, not entirely. Carrick hasn’t done anything most switched-on coaches wouldn’t have done: he’s kept it simple and taken the fairly obvious approach of getting the best out of Kobbie Mainoo and Harry Maguire to strengthen the spine of the side.
The Red Devils look sharp again, and their star players are finally living up to expectations. Bruno Fernandes and Casemiro are in fine fettle. Benjamin Šeško is scoring regularly. Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo are a nightmare to play against.
Quite how sustainable it is to strip away tactical complications and focus primarily on maximising the strengths of an expensively assembled squad remains the biggest question mark over Carrick’s long-term future.
For now, though, it’s working a treat and delivering exactly what was needed. United are settled in third, back in the Champions League, and giving themselves the best possible chance of approaching 2026–27 with a clean slate.

Sunderland will surely be content too. After successive seasons in which all three promoted teams were immediately relegated, the Black Cats wasted little time ensuring they wouldn’t be joining them.
It hardly matters that they’ve lost more games than they’ve won during the same period as United’s resurgence, or that they’ve slipped to 12th, or even that they’re winless in three matches.
Régis Le Bris has delivered 47 points from 35 matches, and you’d better believe he would have taken that this time last year, when Sunderland had spent nearly six months sitting fourth in the Championship and were preparing for the first leg of their play-off semi-final against Coventry City.

FourFourTwo’s prediction
Sunderland 0-2 Manchester United
United have benefited from the relative freedom of Carrick’s outlook. With third all but certain, the freedom is now real.
