Leeds United have been credited with supposed interest in signing Newcastle United ‘keeper Nick Pope this summer.
United’s transfer policy for the summer window has hinged entirely on Premier League survival. With our status effectively secured with three games to go, links to signings are already popping up.
Of course, who the club sign won’t be clear cut yet, but targets are sure to be on the 49ers’ shortlist for when the window opens in mid-June.
Leeds United linked with Newcastle United’s Nick Pope for second successive summer
Last summer, Leeds were on the hunt for a new goalkeeper and Newcastle United’s Nick Pope was one of the names discussed. The towering stopper was viewed as a safe pair of hands and commanding presence in the box.
Instead, United looked to Lucas Perri for £15.6million from Lyon. However, Leeds are claimed to be back in for Pope this summer as Perri’s footing in the squad has shifted, replaced as a starter by Karl Darlow.
That’s according to Sportsboom, who report that Pope remains a target of Daniel Farke’s. It’s said that Pope could be subject to an offer from Elland Road in the coming months.
Obvious truth behind Leeds United’s re-emerging Nick Pope transfer links
I think this is a link we can safely place in the ‘forget’ pile.
Pope hasn’t had a great season at all in the Premier League. He’s falling out of favour, with loanee Aaron Ramsdale taking his place under Eddie Howe.
Whenever you see a player like this linked with Leeds, you have to ask the question: would the 49ers deem Pope a viable signing for next season?
He would have to be able to displace Darlow. And, current form suggests Pope is not on the same level as the Wales man. Ironically, Newcastle sold Darlow to Leeds for £400,000 as he was surplus to requirements.
Going into next season, Farke will want to progress beyond scrapping to finish above the bottom three. As a result, a goalkeeper of Pope’s profile doesn’t look at all suitable.
Although he’s a good shot-stopper and imposing figure, his distribution and ability to play as a ‘modern’ goalkeeper is severely lacking.
Leeds won’t be looking to sign another ‘keeper with that sort of deficiency on the ball. That’s especially pertinent after teething issues for the Brazilian Perri.
