Hearts’ all-time leading goalscorer was at Tynecastle last night to watch them put Rangers to the sword, move seven points clear of them and effectively rule them out of the title race.
It makes it a two-horse race with Celtic, who now face Rangers at the weekend after Hearts go to Motherwell. It’s then Fir Park for Martin O’Neill’s side while Derek McInnes‘ host Falkirk before a final day showdown between the two.
With every passing win, the possibility of a first top flight triumph since 1960 is getting more real for supporters.
And Roberson insists it would be a bigger achievement than Leicester’s, despite the Foxes being 5,000/1 back in 2015/16, and Hearts being priced at 16/1 for this season.
He told talkSPORT: “This is bigger than Leicester winning the league. You have two absolute juggernauts of the game up here. Since Graeme Souness came in, he changed the landscape of Scottish football. Nobody has been able to get anywhere near Rangers or Celtic.
“Hibs fans will not be happy because of the rivalry. That is natural, just as Spurs fans would not be happy if Arsenal won the title. For Scottish football, it would be great and healthy. More importantly, it would be deserved if they can get over the line.
“Hearts fans still hurt from 1986; it is in the back of their minds how quickly things can change, but this group of players has a real belief and a mentality that they’re not beaten. They have come from behind in three games in a row against really good teams.
“We go to Motherwell on Saturday night, which is another realy, really tough match. Celtic appear to be the other horse in the race. They play Rangers on Sunday and Motherwell on Wednesday. It is all to play for and the dream is edging ever closer. Immortality awaits this group of players and the manager. This is even bigger than Leicester City winning the English Premiership.”
Robertson was part of the last Hearts side that sat top of the table for most of the season, only that time they lost it on the final day in 1986.
Ally McCoist suggested that team were actually better than the current one. And when he asked his fellow ex-striker what the key differences were, he actually went the oppoiste way and pointed out similarities.
Robertson added: “Well, the similarities are they keep winning. In 1986, there was a tremendous 27-game unbeaten run, but we did not get it over the line. Celtic won ten of their last eleven games and steamrolled St Mirren. A lot of conspiracy theories about that game, but it was down to us. At the end of the day, we did not get it over the line at Dundee.
“There are similar traits like the mentality, the togetherness. They’re like a band of brothers. They seem to get on with and revel in each other. I think they’re fortunate they have a tremendous manager who is a brilliant fit, gets the club, and knows how to set up his teams. At the top end of the pitch, they have two incredible goal scorers.
“For me, if they get over the line it has got to be great for Scottish football. I Know Hibs fans won’t be happy but it shows Hibs, Aberdeen, Dundee, Dundee United that if you get the right mix, the right manager in…
“The boys at the back, Scottish boys Halkett and Findlay, middle of the park Baningime, Leonard, Devlin have been excellent. But the top end is where it’s been. Kyziridis has fallen off a wee bit but he was terrific second half last night. Shankland and Braga have been magnificent all season.
“There’s similarities but I hope the similarities stop there; I want this team to get over the line. Seeing the relief on the fans’ faces after the game was tremendous. Fans are starting to dare to dream. It would be the first time in 40 years since any other club won the title and the first time in 66 years for Hearts. It would give Scottish football a real shot in the arm. For the first time in many years, people south of the border are talking about a three-horse race for the title. Someone else is in there.”
