And some very late drama meant they stayed two points ahead of their closest pursuers.

The Seagulls’ 3-1 defeat at Newcastle on Saturday saw them overhauled by Brentford and Bournemouth, who both had 3-0 wins.

But Chelsea missed the chance to go back ahead of the Seagulls as they crashed 3-1 at home to Nottingham Forest, who are now almost safe.

Everton came from a goal down to lead Manchester City 3-1 in the evening game and were poised to join Albion on 50 points.

But Erling Harland replied immediately with a brilliant finish.

Then, in the final seconds, Jeremy Doku scored his second goal of the game with a superb curler inside the far post.

While the equaliser did little for City’s title hopes, it will have been cheered by fans of Bournemouth, Brentford and the Seagulls.

Everton still have a great chance to put their Euro push back on course on Sunday when they visit a Crystal Palace side who appear to have lost interest in the league.

A busy Saturday programme starts when Chelsea go to Liverpool in the 12.30pm kick-off.

The 3pm action sees Albion host Wolves, Fulham welcome Bournemouth and Sunderland entertain Manchester United.

Brentford are at Manchester City in the 5.30pm game.
