Wolves drought can end against leaky Sunderland

Wolves have not scored in any of their last three games but there is reason to think that they can end that run when they host Sunderland.

The relegated side showed some fight in a narrow 1-0 home defeat by Spurs last weekend. They fired 11 shots at goal and came close to snatching a draw late on when Joao Gomes had a free-kick saved in the 98th minute.

Wolves’ manager Rob Edwards will be looking to end this campaign on a positive note to aid the club’s attempt of making a quick return from the Championship. Prior to their loss to Spurs, Wolves had won Premier League home games against Liverpool and Aston Villa, and held Arsenal to a draw.

They should therefore have some self-belief against a Sunderland side who have conceded nine goals across their last two games. Losing a 4-3 thriller away at Aston Villa was no disgrace for the Black Cats, but they were humiliated in a 5-0 home thrashing by Nottingham Forest last weekend.

You could think Sunderland’s slump is down to having amassed enough points to avoid relegation, but they still have plenty to play for. Although the Black Cats are 12th, they are still in contention for European qualification, with only four points separating them from Brighton in sixth.

With both teams being on something of a losing streak, I’m avoiding trying to predict the result and backing both teams to score. The odds of that as a straight bet are a little short at 4/5, so I’m adding a caveat of there being under 4.5 goals, to boost the overall price to 6/5.
