Bruno Fernandes normally plays every minute for Man Utd but he was replaced late on in the 3-2 win against Liverpool.
Bruno Fernandes was replaced late on in United’s win against Liverpool
Michael Carrick played down his decision to substitute Bruno Fernandes in the final minutes of Manchester United’s win against Liverpool, insisting it was down to wanting to bring Leny Yoro on.
Fernandes had limped away from a challenge late in the first half at Old Trafford but played on until stoppage time to see his side to a thrilling 3-2 win that secured their return to the Champions League.
He didn’t grab a record-equalling 20th assist of the season but was only denied that accolade by Freddie Woodman touching his header on to Benjamin Sesko.

Despite the absence of a goal or assist, it was another outstanding performance from Fernandes, who has been an almost ever-present under Carrick. The only other time he has been substituted was in the final minute of Carrick’s first game in charge, against Manchester City.
But with every other attacking player already withdrawn against Liverpool, Fernandes was the player to make way for Yoro’s late introduction.
“To be honest, it was just a minute or so to go and [we wanted] to get Leny on the pitch,” said Carrick.
“Obviously Joshua came on, Paddy came on and Amad came on as well and there was nothing behind that apart from that.”
