Poole Coastguard Rescue Team was tasked at approximately 12.32am on April 5 by the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre (JRCC), after a member of the public dialled 999 to report the sighting.
After speaking with the First Informant (FIF), the Officer in Charge (OIC) deployed a team to a vantage point overlooking Poole Bay to conduct an initial visual search.
Following this, and after discussions between the OIC and JRCC, the team carried out a vehicular search along the promenade, covering the area from Alum Chine to Durley Chine and further west towards Shore Road.

Team members also spoke with individuals on the beach at Branksome Chine. With very few people in the area, no unusual activity was reported or observed.
No evidence of a flare being used was found.
With no additional reports in the surrounding area, and no related VHF distress calls or further 999 calls received, the JRCC was satisfied with the findings and the team was stood down.
A debrief was conducted at Shore Road before the team returned to station.
The member of the public acted appropriately in calling 999.
