The Hornets’ opponents, Coventry City, have wrapped up the league title and will be in party mode on Saturday, their Premier League status for next season confirmed.

Below them, though, it’s all to play for.

Ipswich Town only needed five points from their final three games to bank second spot, but have left themselves needing to beat QPR on the final day after draws at West Brom and Southampton in the last week.

Tuesday’s 2-2 at St Mary’s ruled the Saints out of a remarkable rise into the automatic promotion positions and they are guaranteed to be involved in the play-offs.

Millwall and Middlesbrough, however, remain very much in the hunt to go up this weekend.

Should Ipswich fail to beat QPR, that will open the door to the Lions, who would need to win what appears to be a kind home fixture against already-relegated Oxford United.

And if Ipswich lost AND Millwall dropped points, Middlesbrough could still take second spot by beating Wrexham away.

That game also has considerable knock-on effects a few spots down the league, as the Welsh side, Hull City and Derby County scrap it out for the final top-six position.

Just one goal separates Wrexham and Hull, who could both nervously be looking at each others’ results even if they both win.

Should Wrexham beat Middlesbrough, Hull would only need to beat Norwich City by a margin of one more to take the final play-off spot for themselves – having been embedded in the top six for so much of the season.

Derby are hovering should both Wrexham and Hull fail to win.

They would need to beat Sheffield United to take advantage of draws from the two sides above them, but a points would be enough for John Eustace’s side should both Wrexham and Hull lose.

At the bottom of the table, relegation for Oxford United, Leicester City and Sheffield Wednesday has been confirmed.

Later in the day, the League One season comes to a close – with a Watford-adjacent storyline emerging in the hunt for the third-tier play-offs.

Stevenage currently hold sixth spot with 72 points, but should they slip up at home to Wigan Athletic, Luton Town (71 points) or Tom Cleverley’s Plymouth Argyle (70 points) can catch them.
