The venue will have a minimum capacity of 10,000 and will be right next to the Amex on what is currently Bennett’s Field.

It is expected to cost £75-80 million and will be financed by Tony Bloom.

The stadium will be opened no later than the 2030-31 season, subject to planning approvals from Brighton and Hove City Council and Lewes District Council.

The two stadia will be connected by a bridge and the new venue will have underground parking.

Exciting plans were revealed at the Amex today.

The location of the new stadium means existing matchday facilities at the Amex, such as hospitality, club shop and ticket office, can be used for WSL games.

Work has begun on a planning application for what will be a world-leading venue.

It will be one of only three stadia in the world built specifically for the women’s game and the first outside the USA.

Albion chairman Tony Bloom said: “Since we announced our intention to build a stadium for the women’s team in Brighton and Hove, we have seen unprecedented interest locally, nationally and internationally.

“It is a topic I am regularly asked about by many of our fans, clearly indicating the growing level of interest and potential for women’s football.

“It is a significant further investment in our long-term vision for women’s football at Brighton and Hove Albion.

“A women’s stadium in the city is essential to the continued growth of the team.

“We strongly believe it will strengthen our ability to attract elite talent, help develop our younger players for the future, support the growth of our fan base, and create a genuine sense of belonging around the women’s game.”

The announcement came three days after Albion beat WSL leaders Manchester City and in the run-up to an FA Cup semi-final with Liverpool.

They reached the last four by winning at European champions Arsenal.
