Chelsea spent a good chunk of the 2022 summer transfer window pursuing Anthony Gordon before eventually getting priced out of a deal for the then 21-year-old winger fresh off his first full season for Everton. Six months later, Gordon would force a move to Newcastle.

He’s done alright there — certainly better than the options we chose instead in 2022: Raheem Sterling, Mykhailo Mudryk, and Noni Madueke — and, quite annoyingly, he’s done better than alright whenever paying against us (three goals and two assists in six Premier League games). But it looks like Gordon’s time on Tyneside may be ending.

Apparently, Newcastle are looking to cash in and make a profit on their original £40m investment as part of a massive summer overhaul. According to The Athletic, Chelsea are among the teams most interested; though, it’s also pointed out that we have “other priorities in the near term”. Those priorities may or may not include a bit of soul-searching and self-reflection from the powers that be. (Not that I expect any tangible change to our modus operandi.)

Gordon, now 25 and with well over 200 appearances in top-level competitions to his name, certainly would fit the idea that we might try to sign players with some actual experience this time around — who are also “emotionally mature” with “strong character” such as being very divey — our financial situation is questionable at best. The report does claim that our potential interest is “not believed to be dependent on Chelsea qualifying for next season’s Champions League”, which seems about as believable as the rest of the speaking-under-the-condition-of-anonymity-to-protect-relationships claims out of the Chelsea camp about our reevaluation of where the club’s going.

Considering that Gordon isn’t good enough for the likes of Liverpool, Arsenal, and Bayern Munich, he probably will end up at Chelsea in like a nine-figure deal somehow.
