Enzo Fernández’s Chelsea are making a move for Xabi Alonso. The coach who won the Bundesliga with Bayer Leverkusen, and who recently had a setback at Real Madrid, is emerging as the leading candidate to take over following Liam Rosenior’s dismissal.

Calum McFarlane was appointed interim manager for the second time this year, while the Blues’ board decides who will be the club’s next head coach. In his third official match (he had already managed two at the start of the year as interim), he beat Leeds in the FA Cup semifinal and will contest the title against Manchester City.

The board also considers it important to bring in a coach with Premier League experience, since both Enzo Maresca (who had started the season in charge of the squad) and Rosenior were first-time managers in the English top flight.

For that reason, Andoni Iraola, who manages Bournemouth, and Fulham’s Marco Silva are other names of interest to the London club, in addition to the Spaniard who terminated his contract with Real Madrid at the beginning of the year.

Chelsea are not the only club interested in signing Alonso. There are rumors in England that the former Spain World Cup-winning midfielder is being considered to replace Arne Slot at Liverpool next season.
