Manchester City center-back John Stones has confirmed that he will be leaving the club at the end of the season — with Liverpool getting a mention of sorts in an emotional farewell video.

“They say all good things must come to an end but this thing we have had has been the greatest and it will remain a part of me forever,” Stones posted on social media earlier, confirming what most had assumed would happen for some time.

The former Everton man has played for Manchester City for 10 years. In that period, he won six Premier League titles, one UEFA Champions League, two FA Cups, and five League Cups.

He was a part of the best Pep Guardiola team that went head-to-head with Liverpool and Jurgen Klopp, with his clearance off the line in 2019 — a huge moment in that particular title race — referenced in the video.

That was a massive contribution from him that helped decide the outcome of that particular title race, in arguably the best season of his career.

“It has been my home for the past 10 years and it will be my home for the rest of my life,” Stones said as he teared up upon announcing his exit from the Etihad Stadium.

“It has been a rollercoaster in many ways. I came as a kid and now leaving as a man — becoming a father, a husband and, on the pitch, a very fulfilled player.

“I lived all my dreams out and lifted all the things that I came here to achieve. At the start of my career here I never would thought I would be in this position.

“Firstly, to achieve everything but to have the love, the bond with everyone. Every dream has been smashed out of the park.”

Stones was Pep Guardiola’s second signing at Manchester City. He became the world’s second-most expensive defender at the time, moving as a 22-year-old.

“I don’t think it would have been anywhere near as successful without Guardiola,” Stones, who cost around $64 million (£47 million) continued.

“I’m so grateful that I’ve been able to spend so long with him, win everything with him. I feel lucky and grateful for what he’s done for me.”

Guardiola’s own future is not yet 100 per cent determined, though he does have another year left to run on his Manchester City contract. Bernardo Silva is set to leave with Juventus said to be keen on snapping up the Portugal midfielder.

Liverpool.com says: Stones was a top performer at his best, and only injuries held him back from reaching even greater heights. There should be no shortage of options for him this summer when it comes to selecting his next move.
