Manchester United are closing in on the Champions League after beating Brentford 2-1 on Monday night. The Reds need just two more points to mathematically seal their place in Europe’s elite competition for the first time in three years.
Interim head coach Michael Carrick has transformed United since taking over from Ruben Amorim in January. United have lost just twice under the former midfielder, who is making an excellent case to become the club’s next permanent head coach.
And the clamour for Carrick to get the job at Old Trafford will only rise if they can seal Champions League qualification this weekend against Liverpool. Victory in Sunday’s game at M16 will also deal a blow to their rival’s hopes of qualifying for the same competition.

Arne Slot’s team sit just below United in the Premier League table and lost the corresponding fixture back in October when Harry Maguire scored a late winner at Anfield.

Isaac Seelochan of the Manchester Evening News says: “United face a scenario they could have only dreamed of back in January – sealing Champions League qualification with a win against Liverpool. Carrick’s players should be able to relax knowing that whatever happens this weekend, they have a healthy buffer.
“But sealing it at Old Trafford against their fiercest rivals – and denting Liverpool’s qualification hopes in the process – will make Carrick getting the job feel almost certain.”
