David Moyes made clear his frustration with a 2-1 loss for Everton against West Ham.
The Everton manager did not hold back in his criticism of his former employers before the game, saying that the Irons are a club of adequate stature to be steering clear of the threat of relegation. However, the hosts had the last laugh at the London Stadium through a brace from Callum Wilson.
‘Very similar to last week’
The second strike from Wilson, following a Jarrod Bowen knockdown, was a particularly bitter blow for an outfit that are still in the hunt for continental competition. The visitors have now conceded last minute strikes in back-to-back fixtures, having gone down to a 2-1 defeat at the Hill Dickinson Stadium when Virgil van Dijk netted from a set piece in the Merseyside derby for Liverpool.
If the Toffees had picked up those extra two points, they would only be one point away from sixth placed Brighton with four games to go. Moyes has kept quiet about the possibility of qualification for Europe in the last fortnight, but his position on who got the points was clear: especially after Mateus Fernandes was not punished for a handball, he felt that his players did not deserve to be defeated.
Did Everton deserve more from the match?
“I don’t think we deserved to lose, that’s for sure. Very similar to last week, we played well enough at times and didn’t deserve to come away with nothing.
“I’m a bit surprised [about the handball]. I’ve been to see them [the officials] and VAR are saying it was grappling – well, the boy marking him was grappling. He punched the ball. It would have been harsh, but I’m amazed they haven’t given it.
“If any team was going to go and win it, it was probably us. We just didn’t do well enough at the end.”
